LSVT BIG® is an evidence-based physical therapy program specifically designed for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions. The program focuses on improving movement amplitude—helping patients move with bigger, more intentional motions to counteract the slowed, smaller movements commonly associated with Parkinson’s disease.
People with Parkinson’s often experience bradykinesia (slowness of movement), reduced step length, decreased arm swing, and difficulty with balance and daily activities. LSVT BIG addresses these challenges by retraining the brain and body to produce larger, more efficient movements during everyday tasks.
LSVT BIG is delivered through an intensive, standardized treatment protocol, consisting of:
Four sessions per week for four weeks
One-hour individual treatment sessions
Daily home exercise practice
This high-frequency, high-intensity approach promotes neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and form new movement patterns.
LSVT BIG therapy includes:
Large-amplitude, whole-body movements
Functional task training (walking, sit-to-stand, reaching)
Balance and postural control exercises
Gait training with emphasis on step length and arm swing
Strategies to improve speed, coordination, and confidence
Exercises are individualized to each patient’s abilities and functional goals while following the standardized LSVT BIG framework.
Research shows that LSVT BIG can:
Improve walking speed and stride length
Enhance balance and posture
Increase functional mobility and independence
Improve confidence in movement
Support long-term carryover into daily activities
LSVT BIG is appropriate for individuals with Parkinson’s disease at all stages, as well as those with other neurological conditions that affect movement amplitude, when deemed appropriate by a qualified clinician.
LSVT BIG helps individuals with Parkinson’s disease move more effectively by recalibrating how big and powerful their movements feel—leading to improved mobility, safety, and quality of life.
